Jones educator Susan Booth appointed to National Association of Academies of Science
Susan Booth, science teacher at Jones Magnet Middle School, has been appointed by the Virginia Academy of Science Council to the position of delegate representative to the National Association of Academies of Science.
Booth, who also held a position as a science teacher at Kecoughtan High School, boasts over four decades of teaching expertise, exclusively within Hampton City Schools. Furthermore, she assumed roles as a science teacher specialist and contributed to the Science Review Team at the Virginia Department of Education.
Booth says, “I believe in encouraging the development of practices used by scientists, engineers, and mathematicians while mentoring students in their pursuit of those careers through scholarship, meeting scientists, and other opportunities.”
Spanish I students author and share their Spanish books
Sra Pearson's Spanish I classes at Jones Magnet Middle School authored and illustrated children's books for an in-class project. The 35 middle school students from Jones visited Bryan Elementary School to share the books with the three kindergarten classes. Engaging in a heartwarming exchange, the middle schoolers read their stories alongside the elementary students and then assisted each kindergartener in crafting their very own Spanish book to take home.
“It was such a joy to see my students able to share their expertise with younger students. They often focus on how much Spanish they don't know, but this experience helped them highlight how much they have learned in just a few months,” said Pearson.

Theater Club presents Alice in Wonderland
After a seven-year hiatus, theatre is officially back at Jones Magnet Middle School! Theatre Club members worked tirelessly, guided by club co-sponsors Chelsea O'Hanlon and Christiana Pearson, to bring Alice in Wonderland to life as their first major production.
Students showed off their hard work with back-to-back performances on Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26, 2024. Students began preparing for their show at the end of January, and even devoted time during lunch to rehearse in addition to their after-school meetings.
Congratulations to the students and their sponsors for a successful show!
